About BASHH

What is BASHH?

The British Association for Sexual Health and HIV - BASHH - was formed through the merger, in 2003, of the Medical Society for the Study of Venereal Diseases (MSSVD, established 1922) and the Association for Genitourinary Medicine (AGUM, established 1992). The object of BASHH is:

• To promote, encourage and improve the study and practice of diagnosing, treating and managing sexually transmitted infections, HIV and other sexual health problems
   
• To innovate and deliver excellent tailored education and training to health care professionals, trainers and trainees in the UK
   
• To determine, monitor and maintain standards of governance in the provision of sexual health and HIV care
   
• To advance public health in relation to sexually transmitted infections, HIV and other sexual health problems
   
• To champion and promote good sexual health and provide education to the public

The Association membership includes medical practitioners, Nurses, Health Advisers, scientists in the field of medicine and other healthcare workers who have shown a commitment to the specialty, who have been duly elected Fellows, Members and Honorary Fellows.

Criteria for commitment to the specialty are that the applicant should be currently working in or have contributed to the specialty or an allied field. Honorary Life Fellowship may be conferred on persons, including those not medically qualified, who have given distinguished service to the Association.

BASHH has 4 national Scientific Meetings per annum, which are held on Friday afternoons. These meetings include the reading of scientific papers by eminent speakers, discussion and the presentation of cases and are usually held at the Royal Society of Medicine in London. The Annual General Meeting is held in January of each year. In addition, there is an Annual Conference, as well as clinical meetings organised by the Special Interest Groups. Courses, specifically for Doctors in Training, are held annually, and training for Nurses and Health Advisers are being developed. Educational activities for Doctors and other health care professionals working in Sexual Health are also organised at Regional level through the Regional Branches. BASHH has a continuing education strategy and is developing additional educational activities and resources.

There are currently approximately 1,000 members of BASHH, making it the largest such organisation in the world. Members receive mailings which include information about BASHH and other meetings, courses and regular news from the board as well as a Newsletter.
