BASHH welcomes High Court ruling on PrEP
11 November 2016
The British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) welcomes today’s judgement from the Court of Appeal confirming NHS England’s ability to commission Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP).
Commenting on the announcement, Dr Mark Lawton, BASHH Media Chair said:
BASHH are delighted at today’s ruling from the Court of Appeal, which reaffirms NHS England’s ability to commission PrEP. We also welcome NHS England’s announcement that it will now quickly consider whether PrEP will be recommended for funding.PrEP is one of the best evidence-based tools that we have at our disposal to reduce levels of onward HIV transmission and at a time when 17 people a day continue to be diagnosed with HIV in the UK, we urge NHS England to focus on ensuring that treatment is made available to those in need as quickly as possible.
