Update on clade Ib mpox Classification

The UK Health Security Agency has announced that Clade Ia and Ib mpox will no longer be classified as high consequence infectious diseases (HCID). This decision follows a review by the Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens, which concluded that these clades no longer meet the criteria for HCID classification, including high mortality rates and a lack of available interventions.

It is important for those working in GUM services to remain vigilant, as this decision does not reduce the public health significance of clade I mpox. The disease continues to be classified as a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization, with sexual and close physical contact remaining the primary transmission routes. Awareness and prompt identification remain key in supporting affected individuals and preventing further transmission.

BASHH remains committed to supporting public health efforts in the detection, management, and treatment of mpox and will provide relevant updates as needed.
