It is a remarkable milestone to celebrate 20 years of collaboration between Genitourinary Medicine (GUM) and Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (SRH) specialists. Over the past two decades, we have worked together to address evolving challenges, share expertise, and enhance patient care. This year’s conference embraces our theme: Past, Present, and Future, bringing together our shared history, our current challenges, and our aspirations for the future of integrated care.Today, the focus on sexual and reproductive health care has never been more critical. With increasing rates of sexually transmitted infections, the need to deliver effective contraceptive care to a diverse population, and rising pressures on NHS services and budgets, we are faced with the challenge of ensuring accessible, individualised, and inclusive care for all.
Our shared expertise in managing complex cases in everyday practice highlights the importance of collaboration. Together, we can explore innovative solutions and enhance integration across our services. This conference provides a unique opportunity to reflect on where we have come from, examine where we are now, and collectively shape the future of sexual and reproductive health care.

Speakers
Dr Janet Barter
Dr Janet Barter FFSRH FRCOG
Following undergraduate medical training in Sheffield, Janet switched to Obstetrics and Gynaecology from GP training after realising from work in UK and West Africa the crucial importance of women’s health. Training in O&G included endocrinology, fertility, menopause, PMS, menstrual disorders and medical gynaecology, as well as contraception and abortion. She is a BMS Menopause specialist and a member of the Institute of psychosexual medicine. She also has a MA in Leadership for Health and Social Care Three London Consultant SRH posts have provided extensive experience of working and leading across both hospital and community based services. Janet has clinical and teaching skills across the whole of SRH and has been Training Programme Director for CSRH in London. For FSRH she has Chaired the Specialty Advisory Committee and acted as Vice President for Specialty before being elected President in June 2022.
In September 2024 she was elected as Vice Chair of Council of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges
Dr Chris Ward
Dr Chris Ward is a consultant in Sexual Health and HIV at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. He studied medicine at Manchester University and then trained in Genitourinary Medicine in the North West. He has an MSc in Public health and a PGCert in postgraduate medical education.
He has a special interest in Chemsex and PrEP and leads for both for Manchester. He also has an interest in the development of services for young people, chairing safeguarding MDTs and has contributed nationally to Child Sexual Exploitation developments, particularly in boys.
He is a Diploma of HIV examiner, is part of the BHIVA external relations subcommittee and is the current BASHH conference and communication secretary.
Dr Mathew Phillips
Matt is a GUM consultant in Cumbria and an honorary professor of GUM & Ethics at UCLan. Originally from Birmingham, his medical degree is from Manchester, his masters from Keele and his MD from Trinity College Dublin. Throughout his career he has focussed on ethics in particular its applications to sexual health and HIV. He sits on the BMJ Ethics committee and is a regional advisor for the Royal College of Physicians.
Dr John Saunders
Dr John Saunders is a Consultant in Genitourinary Medicine and an Honorary Associate Professor at University College London (UCL). He serves as the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) Lead for the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) in Blood Borne and Sexually Transmitted Infections (BBSTI) at University College London (UCL). Dr Saunders is the lead author of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) DoxyPEP guideline and co-chairs the BASHH Bacterial Special Interest Group (BSIG). As a clinician, research and public health practitioner, his work focuses on advancing the understanding, management and control of sexually transmitted infections and HIV.
Dr Elizabeth Okecha
Dr Liz Okecha is a Consultant in Genitourinary and HIV Medicine as well as Clinical Lead for St Helens Sexual Health, Mersey and West Lancashire NHS Teaching Hospitals. Dr Okecha has recently been appointed key opinion lead for St Helens HIV fast track cities and in early 2024 became Chair of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) HIV & blood borne virus special interest Group and Co-Chair of the BASHH HIV prevention group. Within the Royal College of Physicians, Dr Okecha is the GUM and HIV Representative for the Joint Specialty Committee for Infectious Diseases. She has a keen interest in Education and completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education during her higher specialist training. She is a Faculty Registered Trainer for contraception, STI foundation Trainer for GUM and an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Bristol.
Dr Victoria Lashmar
Dr Lashmar is a higher specialty trainee in Genitourinary (GU) Medicine and General Internal Medicine, currently undertaking her training in central London. Following her undergraduate studies at the University of Southampton, she completed her Foundation Programme in the Wessex Deanery. After spending three years abroad, she returned to the UK to begin her Internal Medicine Training (IMT) in Kent.
During her IMT, she earned her MRCP (UK) and looked to develop her interest in Obstetric Medicine by completing a postgraduate module at King's College London, as well as modules in Internal Medicine at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. Dr Lashmar is passionate about individual and public health interventions aimed at reducing disease risk and adverse outcomes. She also has a strong interest in medical ethics, which has evolved from her undergraduate years into her clinical practice.
Looking ahead, Dr Lashmar aspires to undertake out-of-programme experience to gain accreditation in Obstetric Medicine with the Royal College of Physicians. Outside of her professional commitments, she enjoys staying active, spending time in nature, and cherishing moments with her husband and friends.
Elizabeth Parkes
Elizabeth qualified as a Registered Nurse in 2023 with a first-class honours degree from Manchester Metropolitan University and subsequently began working in the Integrated Sexual Health specialty. She is currently employed as a Band 6 Specialist Nurse within The Northern Sexual Health Service, the largest provider of sexual health services across the Northwest.
Prior to this, Elizabeth had a strong start to her career working as a Registered Nurse Associate in Acute Care and Postoperative settings. In 2020, she was honoured to be named one of only 13 finalists for the Nursing Times - Nurse Associate of the Year award, showcasing her contributions to the nursing profession.
Elizabeth has a strong interest in this specialty and, during her undergraduate degree, conducted a research project and literature review on the experiences and barriers faced by AFAB transgender males in accessing cervical screening.
She is deeply passionate about education, advocacy, and interdisciplinary collaboration within sexual health. Elizabeth’s clinical approach is centred on delivering evidence-based care while addressing the complex and diverse needs of patient populations.
Dr Katheryn M Clement
Dr Kathryn M Clement is a Consultant in Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare who specialises in medical gynaecology and all aspects of sexual health.
Dr Clement qualified at the University of Oxford in 1995 and was trained in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in both Oxford and the North East. In 2007 she started subspecialty training in Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare with Dr Diana Mansour in Newcastle.
She became a Consultant at Newcastle Sexual Health Services in August 2013 undertaking both sexual health and medical gynaecology.
In September 2023 the gynaecology part of her role was separated from her sexual health role due to changes in provider. Currently she works 2 days a week as a gynaecologist for Newcastle Hospitals based at The Westgate Building on the CAV site. Her special interests are medical gynaecology including menopause care, complex contraception including difficult contraceptive implant removals and colposcopy. She is a British Menopause Society accredited specialist and a trainer for FSRH, BMS and BSCCP qualifications.
Dr Kate Campbell
Dr Kate Campbell is a community sexual and reproductive health consultant currently based in Nairobi, Kenya. Kate has been involved in organising FSRH events since 2021. Kate is an FSRH Faculty registered trainer and is also a member of the MFSRH part 1 exam group. Kate has a specialised interest in complex contraception, postnatal contraception and psychosexual care. Kate is passionate about improving access to sexual and reproductive healthcare. BA (Hons), MBChB, DTM&H(Dist), MFSRH, Dip GUM, DIPM.
Zara Haider
Dr Zara Haider, FRCOG, FFSRH, Dip. GUM, Pg Cert in Health Management and Leadership has been a Consultant in Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare at Kingston Hospital in Surrey since 2012. She is Senior Vice President of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare and Vice President for Membership and Workforce, Training Programme Director for Community Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare in London and KSS and FSRH General Training Programme Director for Kingston. She is a past chair of the FSRH Meetings Committee and a former Darzi Fellow.
Dr Natalie Woodhead
Dr. Natalie Woodhead is a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital NHS Trust, she leads the Early Pregnancy and Acute Gynaecology Unit. Dr. Woodhead oversees a team dedicated to providing comprehensive care for women experiencing early pregnancy complications and acute gynaecological conditions.
The unit collaborates closely with Tommy's Centre for Miscarriage Research, one of the UK's leading centres dedicated to understanding and preventing miscarriage. This partnership ensures that cutting-edge research informs clinical practice. Dr Woodhead is passionate about improving patient outcomes and enhancing the quality of care in early pregnancy and gynaecology.
Dr Luke Parkes
Luke is a specialty doctor in Dysphoria and Sexual Health. He is currently based at TransPlus Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He is currently taking a year out of programme (OOP) to work as a Specialty Doctor at TransPlus, the first Gender Dysphoria Service integrated within HIV and Sexual Health. He is interested in sexual and reproductive healthcare for trans and non-binary people.
Dr Sian Pearson
Dr Sian Pearson is an ST5 registrar in Community Sexual and Reproductive Health based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. Sian and has developed an interest in termination of pregnancy, complex contraception, genitourinary medicine, and medical leadership. She was on the FSRH IUC Guideline Development Committee, and currently sits on the FSRH Training and Development Committee. Outside of work she loves walking in the Peak District, cooking, and spending time with her toddler and two cats.
Dr Emily Boardman
Dr Emily Boardman is a Consultant in Genitourinary Medicine at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Emily trained in Sexual Health in the North West. She has a special interest in Medical Education and has a PGCert in Medical Education from the University of Cardiff.

Karen Trainis
Karen Trainis graduated from Liverpool University with a Bachelor in Nursing in 1998. Following an initial career in oncology and intensive care, Karen undertook a Community Specialist Practice degree in General Practice and worked as a practice nurse for ten years with a special interest in sexual health and contraception, transitioning to a role as a sexual health nurse and health adviser.
Karen now works as a Specialist Health Adviser at UHSussex, Brighton. Her role focuses on caring for pregnant women and people living with HIV, living with hepatitis b, have a positive result for syphilis and any sexual health needs.
Additionally, Karen is a key member of the Sunflower Clinic, which supports women living with HIV. She is involved in the introduction of immediate post-natal contraception and teaches sexual health to midwifery students.
